White House vetoes Democrat bill to raise additional funds for the USPS

The bill is expected to go along party lines for the most part on Saturday, with Democrats supporting it. House lawmakers are actively urging their members to oppose the legislation, and it will likely not be considered in the Republican-controlled Senate.

The White House criticized the bill for issuing funds “arbitrarily” without tying those funds to coronavirus relief as the election in a statement of administrative policy released Friday night.

“The administration strongly opposes the passage of HR 8015. Instead of reforming the US Postal Service (USPS) to ensure its continued viability in the modern economy, HR 8015 would randomly give USPS $ 25 billion in ‘ need ‘taxpayer funding, without linking that funding to either the COVID-19 pandemic or the upcoming elections,’ the statement released by the Office of Management and Budget read in part.

The statement also accused Democrats of trying to “exploit the COVID-19 pandemic as a condition of counterproductive restrictions on USPS’s already limited operational flexibility.”

The statement also claims that the “USPS has not changed its service standards this year,” but as CNN reported, internal USPS documents clearly show that USPS is planning some policy changes that could have resulted in longer delivery times for voting, although that policy has since reversed.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
