Pascal is not a newcomer to the Animal Crossing series, but he made his first appearance in Animal Crossing: New Horizons after Wave One of his summer update was released this week. The Red Sea Otter loves scallops and will trade you DIY recipes in exchange for them. He can also gift you with pearls, a rare craft item required for certain recipes, including the new mermaid set.
How to find Pascal on your island
You can find Pascal while swimming and diving in the oceans of your island. If you don’t know how yet, check out our Animal Crossing Swimming Guide for instructions on where to get a swimsuit and how to swim.
Once you are in the water and start diving for sea creatures, Pascal will finally appear, but only when he finds a scallop. It won’t appear every time you catch a scallop or even the first time, it’s random and we’re not quite sure what the rate is, but it appears to be only once a day. However, it appears that he may appear on your island along with other special visitors. Leif was in the town square on my island the same day I met Pascal.
When Pascal approaches you, he will ask you for the scallop you just found. If you choose to give it to him, he will reward you with a DIY mermaid-themed recipe and will probably say something philosophical before swimming to the other side of the ocean barrier, where you can’t approach or talk to him until The Next Encounter.
What to do with pearls
Pascal can give you a pearl, which is a rare craft material that will come in handy for crafting furniture and clothing in the Mermaid Set, which Pascal offers DIY recipes for scallops. You can also find pearls while diving in search of sea creatures.
Should I save scallops for Pascal?
Scallops count as one of the new sea creatures you can find and donate to the museum, and you can also sell them to Nook’s Cranny for 1,200 bells. Since you can also trade them for DIY recipes, it makes sense to stick with them; however, we are still trying to verify how the scallop exchange with Pascal works. At the moment, it seems like it has the ability to appear only when you catch one, and it will give you the option to change it, which would make saving scallops useless. But if you find it can meet him like you would any other special visitor, like CJ or Flick, and then it would be helpful to have scallops to trade.
We will update this section once we can verify how trading with Pascal works.
