The Seahawks have been thinking for some time now that the team is not done making moves, specifically on defense. But now one of Seattle’s reported top goals is off the market and not making its way to the Pacific Northwest.

Wassell’s Thoughts: How to define the success of Seahawks in 2020

That player would be multiple Pro Bowl defensive end Everson Griffen, who signed a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday. Griffen played for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll in high school at USC and will play professionally for a team that is not the Minnesota Vikings for the first time.

So where do the Seahawks come from here? Former NFL quarterback Jake Heaps shared his thoughts on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Tom, Jake and Stacy Thursday afternoon.

“Not exciting, but they have to keep going,” Heaps said of the news Griffen signed with Dallas. “For me, it becomes a question or do you believe that Darrell Taylor a few weeks out is a problem?”

Taylor, the second-round team, had surgery on his leg earlier this year and is not expected to train for a few weeks. He was one of the four riders the Seahawks added this offseason, whether through the concept as a free agent.

‘If not, they probably make no moves. “They probably won’t add any other player unless it was Jadeveon Clowney at some crazy event,” Heaps said.

But if the Seahawks feel that Taylor needs more time or that the team generally needs more help on the line, Heaps thinks another player coaching Carroll in college will be next on the list. , although he is more concerned with another defensive position.

“Clay Matthews seems to be the man they judge next to, the man they believe will come in and be the man after Everson Griffen,” Heaps said. ‘But in my mind I’m still looking at this defensive approach, guys. I’m still hitting the table and saying that defensive tackle is still a massive need of this team, it’s a big hole and you need to fill that depth with good rotation players and good proven players, and there’s something out there. “

Two veterans coming to mind?

“I would love to see (Damon) ‘Snacks’ Harrison, Marcell Dareus,” Heaps said. “… Those are the next few guys they’ll be targeting, but I think it’s going to be Clay Matthews here soon.”
