How important are launch games to a new console? The answer varies greatly.
Some consoles launch with games that define the generation, such as the original Xbox with Halo: Combat Evolved or the N64 with Mario 64. But during the last generation, the 2013 releases weren’t terribly significant for the software. Xbox One highlights included a reliable Forza game, the pretty good Dead Rising 3, and the disappointing Ryse: Son of Rome. The PS4 launched with the forgotten Killzone: Shadow Fall, the Knack with lots of memes and the excellent Resogun shooter.
Our recollection of the end of 2013 is that everyone plays Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag or Call of Duty on their new consoles, or even persists with the then-recent GTA 5 on their PS3 or Xbox 360. The exclusive highlights of PlayStation 4 don’t they came much later, although it’s fair to say that Destiny was one of the console’s first important moments. That reached 10 months into the life of the console in September 2014.
So with that in mind, how important is is launch window of the console generation?
Honestly, in our opinion, it is more important to Microsoft than to Sony. The PS5 is breaking free from the massive goodwill of the PS4, and unless it costs too much it’s likely to run out during the holiday season regardless of the games available at launch. The Xbox Series X is well positioned to capitalize on Microsoft’s efforts to improve its gaming offering in recent years, but it comes from a generation that Microsoft has completely spent second. The responsibility falls on them to cause a stir.
Launching with a Halo game is a statement of intent by Microsoft that you want to start running software, this time.
We know a lot more about what Sony is doing at launch than Microsoft right now, with only Halo Infinite confirmed by internal Xbox studies. However, we look forward to more games being announced during the July presentation focused on Xbox’s first party, which is sure to include a new entry in the Forza Motorsport series.
But what new games will officially hit Sony and Microsoft consoles in 2020? right now? On paper, it’s not really that many, but each console has a couple of titles worth getting excited about if you plan to be an early adopter. Here, we’ll talk about the two possible launch lines so far, and provide an easy-to-read list of which games are guaranteed for the next generation before the end of the year.
What the PS5 has so far
While Sony’s presentation earlier this month was well received, the actual number of Sony’s own exclusives is true they’re releasing on PS5 this year is … one.
It’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which is exciting, but it’s been compared to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in its reach, and is therefore expected to be a smaller experience than 2018 Spider-Man on PS4. There’s also Astro’s Playhouse, technically, a game that will be pre-installed on your PS5 and designed to showcase the DualSense controller.
That doesn’t mean that Spider-Man is the only one console Exclusive this year. Deathloop, from the esteemed creators of Dishonored, Arkane Studios, will launch on PS5 and PC in 2020. We hope it will be a timed exclusive, simply because Bethesda publishes it and it is not an internal Sony game. A similar deal appears to cover Betwda’s Ghostwire: Tokyo, but that won’t be available until 2021.
This makes us wonder if Sony created any time exclusive offers just to make sure it has had enough releases for PlayStation 5 only this year. The other games that fall into the exclusive category, except on PC, are Gearbox’s Godfall, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and Jett: The Far Shore, all of which are destined for late 2020 releases (and are also coming to PC) . Bugsnax is another, but it will also come to PS4.
It’s fair to say that Sony could have been more specific with some of the details of the launch of its bigger titles during the presentation. But again, with interest in the PS5 at such a high level, our guess is that Sony is more interested in keeping the momentum going on the console. after launching.
While the price could affect performance, we expect the PS5 to run out regardless of this year. A Bloomberg The report in April suggested that there will be fewer PS5s available at launch than PS4 units, so Sony is unlikely to need more software push than a new Spider-Man game anyway.
Everything announced during the event for PS5 that will be published by Sony, such as Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West and Returnal will be released in 2021 or later, according to what we currently know.
Here are the new games we know are coming to PS5 this year. Here we’ve focused on new titles for 2020, and not just existing game ports like Fortnite, though we’ve included new editions of 2020 games like Marvel’s Avengers.
Note that this is likely to grow the closer we get to launch, and there will surely be a new Call of Duty here sometime.

What about Xbox Series X?
Our expectation is that Microsoft will have at least Halo Infinite and an eighth Forza Motorsport game ready for the Xbox Series X launch period. We also believe that the previously announced Microsoft Flight Simulator reboot is likely to be ‘optimized for Xbox Series X’. ‘, although until now it has only been announced for Xbox One and PC.
Like Sony, Microsoft has a number of exclusive external studios, such as Call of the Sea, The Medium, and The Ascent. It is also the only next generation platform that will have the new Yakuza game at launch.
Otherwise, expect to find out a lot more about what Microsoft has planned to release during the Xbox Series X July live stream, which has no date yet, which will focus on games from Xbox’s internal studios. This is when we will first see Halo Infinite.
