What does Alex Smith’s return mean for Dwayne Haskins?

Another great story came out of Washington on Friday night when it was announced that quarterback Alex Smith was cleared by his doctors to return to full football activity after more than a year of rehabilitation after his horrible leg injury that he broke his tibia and fibula, and forced him to take innumerable subsequent surgeries to repair it.

So now that Smith is back on the scene, does that mean he’ll start playing in Washington again? More importantly, does that mean Dwayne Haskins’ work is at risk?

Simply put, no.

A clear distinction was made on Friday that Smith had been cleared by its doctors, although Washington training staff and the medical team had not yet approved his playing. That won’t happen until the end of July, and even then it is unclear how many training opportunities he will have, as COVID-19 has decimated the training camp rules and there is little confidence that 11v11 attacks will take place for quite some time. . .

Conversely, Smith’s return to soccer activities may be beneficial to Haskins, as he has one of the most prominent mentors at his side on the practice field. Haskins went through his trials and tribulations during his rookie season in 2019, and several claims were made that Smith’s guidance and leadership helped Haskins on the road. It’s important to note that Smith was one of the players that NFL star Patrick Mahomes attributes to some of his early successes as well.

In the future, there are several ways that this can develop. If it is clear that Smith is ready to play in the near future, it is very possible that Washington will seek to release him, saving them $ 14 million against the salary cap, or exchange him to another team where he has a better opportunity to play. . It has also been thought that more NFL teams could choose to have three quarterbacks on the list instead of two, likely due to the threat of the coronavirus. If this were the case in Washington, Smith could stay for the season and then reevaluate in the future.

Simply put, everyone should be delighted with Alex’s return to football and celebrate for the monumental achievement that it is. His return after such a horrible injury is nothing more than a complete miracle, and it was certainly more difficult than any of us could imagine. We can discover the football side of things later, right now we just want to celebrate Alex.
