The West Virginia athletic department announced Saturday that 28 members of its soccer program tested positive for COVID-19.
In all, 41 department members have tested positive for 518 coronavirus tests since June. Five members of the men’s basketball program reportedly also tested positive.
West Virginia said everyone who tested positive isolated themselves, and contact tracing was also deployed.
The announcement is another wave in the tide that threatens the college football season. Several programs have announced a troubling number of coronavirus cases, highlighted by Clemson’s 36 total as of last month.
Big Ten and Pac-12 have already announced that their soccer teams will play only conference games in 2020, and Big 12 is among the conferences trying to preserve their off-conference schedules. Now, 28 cases in one of the conference programs won’t help, although it’s worth noting that the mountaineers didn’t disclose the timing of the cases and how many players tested positive.
West Virginia is still scheduled to open its season against the State of Florida on September 5.
