Patty Jenkins‘2017 blockbuster Wonder Woman There is a terrifying film that suffers from a climactic battle that sticks out like a sore thumb. While the rest of the movie’s combat scenes felt tactile and personal, the final battle turned into a CGI-heavy slog, leaving a bad taste in the minds of some viewers. Turns out it wasn’t the original plan: Jenkins says the studio forced him to change the ending at the last minute, and says his original end was on a smaller scale.
With Wonder Woman 1984 Arriving in theaters and on HBO Max this week, director Patti Jenkins was asked about the difference between the completion of the new sequel and its original 2017 film, with the IGN interviewer wondering if the choice to put things down a bit in the sequel is intentional. A. “The original ending of the first movie was too small, but the studio made me change it at the last minute,” Jenkins revealed. “So it’s always been a bit boring [the ending is] People talk about one thing because I agree. And I told the studio we didn’t have the time, but that was it. I ended up loving it, but it wasn’t the real end of the movie. ”
I remember being so excited when I watched Wonder Woman For the first time in the theater because it seemed like the end of the movie was leading to something daring from the point of view of storytelling. It seemed that everything was pointing to the idea that Ares, the god of war, whom Diana was hunting for for the whole movie, was not a physical creature that could be killed, but instead only a part of humanity that could be defeated. It represents and inspires that through kindness and love. But instead, it turned out that David Thules’ Sir Patrick was really Ares, and there was a heavy fight between him and Diana in the rain at the military base.
Equipped with knowledge of Jenkins’ new comment, I now wonder if she would have wanted to go with a more spoiled ending than she originally said, but Warner Bros. and DC got scared and forced her to add that big CGI war. (The fact that the visual effects don’t look very good seems to be aligned with her warning that they don’t have time to do what the studio wants.) Studio filmmaking is a game of compromise, and despite Jenkins losing this particular battle, I think it finally ended with winning the war.
