Detroit – Wayne County has issued an advisory to the Public Health Division, strongly recommending that all public, non-public, and boarding schools in the county’s jurisdiction be Jan. 15, should be shifted to distance education during 2021.
According to a news release, 1,170 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the county on Friday. The county reported 4,185 new COVID-19 cases since Sunday.
“We’ve reached a stage of epidemic that we hope the county will never see,” said Wayne County executive Warren C. Evans said. “This advisor strongly recommends that we issue this at this time to prevent further spread of COVID-19.
“Wayne County is home to many hard-knit communities and we value our time together with our families. But in the second week of next year, we need to redouble our efforts to rescue the most vulnerable among us, “Evans added. “This guidance is essential for the protection of the health and safety of this community.”
County officials said the 2020 Public Act directs 149 school districts to develop education programs to accommodate the epidemic and keep students safe. The health officer has the right to provide counseling.
The county said it was recommended to switch to their virtual learning to prevent the spread of COVID due to cold temperatures, indoor congestion and hospitalization. Officials said the recommendation indicated to the age group that they could spread COVID-19 without showing signs and symptoms.
“We are working very closely with our school districts to prevent further outbreaks,” said Dr. Maunad Hammami, chief health strategist for Wein County. “Our goal is to protect schools, their staff and students from COVID-19.”
