‘Watch me’: Biden hits back at Trump over attacks on age

Trump, who often referred to his 77-year-old opponent in tweets and speeches as “Sleepy Joe,” tried to portray Biden as mentally unfit for the presidency during the final stretch of the 2020 campaign. The Trump campaign has even zeroed in on Biden’s age and mental competence with television commercials that made the former vice president stumble upon his remarks.

If elected in November, Biden (born November 20, 1942) would be the oldest person to become president. The current record holder is Trump, who was 70 (born June 14, 1946) when he was elected in 2016. Ronald Reagan was 77 years and 349 days old when he left office in 1989, younger than Biden would be then he was sworn.

Biden said it was fair of voters to nominate a candidate who was more than 70 years old over his or her age, but the former vice president tried to dispel the concerns Americans may have about this age.

“The only thing I can say to the American people is that it is a legitimate question to ask everyone. Watch me, ”said Biden.

Biden, who had previously identified himself as a ‘transition candidate’ when he was elected in November, also left the window open that he could consider serving more than one term in office.

“Absolutely,” Biden said when asked by Muir about the possibility of serving eight years as president.

Biden described his remarks from the past as ‘building the bank’ within the Democratic Party to create a new generation of leadership.

“Sa [what] I want to do is make sure that this is over, we have a new First Chamber, we won state houses back, we are in a position where we are moving to a period of bringing people to the visibility they need to to be able to lead nationally, ”said Biden. ‘And that’s about raising people. And that’s what I’m about. ‘
