Authorities said Thursday they believe Rivera drowned in “what appears to be a tragic accident,” and said the search and rescue effort had turned into a search and recovery effort, with Rivera presumably dead.
Rivera and her 4-year-old son, Josey, jumped into the water on a rented pontoon. Hours later, her son was found alone in the boat with his life jacket.
Investigators do not suspect foul play; The security video shows that the couple is the only person on board.
Robert Inglis of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team told Us Weekly on Sunday that Rivera He sent a family member a photo of his son in front of a cove, with a timestamp on the photo stating that it was taken between 90 minutes and 2 hours before the boy was found alone.
“There was a photo sent to a family member showing the boy in the boat next to a cove,” Inglis told the magazine on Monday. “We found where that cove was.”
