After questions about if Wonder Woman 1984 would possibly skip theaters to premiere digitally, a new trailer for the film confirms that it gets the treatment on big screen.
Director Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal appeared at DC Comics’ FanDome event to answer a few public Q & A’s and debut the new trailer. The new trailer sees Wonder Woman take over on Cheetah, a new villain played by Kristen Wiig. There are also some new scenes that reunite Diana Prince with Steve Trevor.
Wonder Woman 1984 was originally intended to hit theaters on June 5, but was postponed until August 14 when Warner Bros. tried to figure out a new scheme for their blockbusters with theaters close. The studio slowed down then Wonder Woman 1984 renewed from August 14 to October 2, which remains the current release date.
“I find the film really great on the big screen,” Jenkins said during the event. “We’ll unpack it, and we believe in putting it in the cinema.”
Earlier this year, AT&T CEO John Stankey spoke about whether certain titles under the Warner Bros. label (WarnerMedia is a subsidiary of AT&T) would go directly to digital retailers. Warner Bros., Universal, and Disney have all pulled some of their films from theatrical releases to debut on digital platforms amid the pandemic. When it came to some of Warner Bros.’s bigger titles, Stankey put out Christopher Nolan’s Tenet ever gets a digital first release. While Wonder Woman 1984 remained ‘unlikely’ to go that route, it was not impossible.
“I think there may be some things we have built for theatrical release that migrate to a [streaming] construct? Sure, ‘said Stankey. ‘Will it happen on a movie like that? Tenet of Wonder Woman 1984? I would be very surprised … actually I can assure you Tenet that will not be the case. ”
Now, however, it seems Wonder Woman 1984 will also go exclusively to theaters. However, nothing is certain.
