Bono and the Edge performed a bit of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” as part of a televised broadcast with Irish musicians this past weekend.
The U2 duo participated in Songs From an Empty Room, a fundraiser for crew members who have been unable to work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to appearing on the show, the singer and guitarist helped by donating more than $ 230,000 to Minding Creative Minds and the Association of Irish Stage Technicians Hardship Fund, the beneficiaries of the event.
As Bono explains in the performance video, he and his former bandmate chose the classic song as a tribute to their roadies, who often play “Stairway to Heaven” while setting up the U2 team.
“The Irish road team, the best in the world, that’s for sure,” says the singer. “We can say that, and the U2 group, we have been all over the world and that is well known. However, there is one annoying aspect of the Irish crew that has to be said. Wherever you go in the world, whatever the Wherever you’re playing, whether it’s Olympia or 3 Arena or Madison Square Garden, come on in and it’s a great time, and you’ll hear a song we said, ‘We’ll never, never play this. And that’s right:’ Stairway to Heaven ‘ These professionals think they play better than the band. And you know, it may be true. “
Bono then proceeds to sing the first two verses before he stumbles, at which point Edge gets him back on track. “It makes me wonder … if they’re not okay,” jokes the singer, “they can play the tune better.”
