Yep, the car apparently comes from a volcano.
Everyone knows that GM came a little late after the pony car wars. While Ford first tried to be with the Mustang, Plymouth actually knocked it out by just days with the launch of Barracuda. That was back in 1964 and the Chevrolet Camaro did not launch until 1967, so General Motors ran to overtake Ford and Chrysler. As you can see in this car commercial, interest in the Camaro GM certainly went up for a lot of drama.
Yes, you saw that right: the 1967 Chevy Camaro SS 350 comes from a volcano, thanks to Hollywood magic. Those “rocks” tumble away from the body, which is completely undamaged, as sparks fly through the air. Some steam curls from one of the badges, which show that apparently the steel body on the Camaro is inexcusable for heat damage?
Really, it’s better if you do not think too hard about this commercial, if you just take everything as representative and not literally. Considering that people came out and bought the Camaro in droves, this commercial certainly did not hurt GM’s marketing facilities.
It is fascinating to go back to the roots of a rivalry between the Chevy Camaro and Ford Mustang to see how the cars were depicted by motorists at the time. Apart from being portrayed as extremely rugged and rugged, almost like what you would expect today with a truck commercial, the various features of the Camaro are fetishized by the broadcaster and tight camera angles. Yes, that was a use in the day of the car ads, it is interesting that it specifically focuses on the stripes for the rally and the folding rear seats. Maybe in 50 years, people will laugh at all the SUV ads to support powered elevator gates and rear cameras.
Finally, at the end of the commercial, we see the Camaro en route. Having the cars parked back stationary during the day was commonplace, unlike current ads where muscle cars run with the mountain pass or do a burnout in the middle of a city. However, with the car coming out of a volcano, it’s all pretty dramatic, only in a different way.
