The Washington Football Team issued a statement in support of head coach Ron Rivera who announced the details of his diagnosis of cancer on Thursday night.
Coach Ron Rivera was recently diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), located in a lymph node and discovered from a self-examination. The cancer is in an early stage, and is considered to be highly treated and cured, and provides a good prognosis for Coach Rivera for a complete recovery. Coach Rivera has consulted with leading physicians and oncology specialists and puts his treatment plan in collaboration with the team’s medical staff and outside physicians. For now, Coach has asked that the team keep things businesslike and stay focused, but a “Plan B” is in place when it is determined that he should take some time off.
“Coach Rivera would like to thank the team doctors and athletic trainers, and all the health care specialists who will help him with his treatment plan. In addition, Coach Rivera would like to express his hearts through the Snyders, coaches, players, staff and fans of the Washington Football Team, as well as his family for their love and support during this time.
“The Washington Football Team wishes Coach Rivera a speedy recovery, and we will support him every step of the way.”
Jack Del Rio would, if necessary, make an obvious head coach of Plan B, having served twice in the role with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders. However, Rivera told ESPN that he would continue with his normal routine unless he was forced to change course.
‘I plan to go on coaching,’ he said. ‘Doctors encouraged me to do the same. They said, ‘If you feel strong, do it. Do not slow down, do your physical activities. ‘But everyone tells me by week three or four, you’ll start feeling it. ”
Rivera also sent out a tweet thank the people for their support.
“Stephanie, Christopher, Courtney and I thank YOU ALL for your love and support,” Rivera said.
