Washington puts Reuben Foster on the PUP list

Linebacker Reuben Foster will begin training camp with the Washington soccer team on the roster actively / physically unable to perform, the NFL club announced Monday.

The former Alabama All-American missed the 2019 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament and the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee in practice on May 20, 2019.

The Active List / PUP can be used for players who are unable to start training camp due to a soccer related injury. Players can be removed from the roster and join practice immediately when they receive medical clearance.

If a player remains active / PUP until the beginning of the regular season, he may be transferred to the reserve / PUP list. That designation prohibits a player from practicing with the team for the first six weeks of the season, but it also keeps him available for later in the season without occupying a spot on the active roster.

After six weeks of the regular season, teams have three weeks to make decisions about the players on the reserve / PUP list, either by activating, releasing, or moving them to the injured reserve.

Washington’s new coaching staff didn’t have the opportunity to work with Foster during the team’s offseason program, which was limited to online meetings due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But in May, Washington defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio said he hoped Foster would be ready to play in 2020.

“I think he has done a good job trying to participate in the meetings,” Del Rio said, “and we have approached him as if he was there, and then we will see if we get authorization or not.” for him to really go.

“But in terms of the mental focus and in terms of his participation in the meetings and being up to date with the facility and getting the training and all of that, he’s been on point with that so we can’t impact right now.” it is where you are with your rehabilitation and if you have authorization to go. But he is working hard doing all he can with us in the virtual meetings and absorbing all the information about what we are going to expect of him as a linebacker. “

Foster has not played for the Redskins since Washington obtained it as a waiver claim on November 27, 2018.

Foster spent the last five games of the 2018 season on the commissioner’s Exemption List, while the NFL investigated his arrest in Tampa, Florida, on November 24, 2018, prompting the San Francisco 49ers to resign the linebacker. Tampa’s arrest resulted in Foster being charged with a misdemeanor charge of first-degree domestic assault. But that charge was dismissed by the Florida state attorney before Foster was prosecuted.

Foster had been reinstated by the league prior to his injury.

Foster was the 6A Class Lineman of the Year and an All-American Parade and Under Armor at Auburn High School in 2012. In Alabama, Foster started for the CFP National Championship team in 2015 and garnered unanimous American recognition and Award. Butkus as the best linebacker in the nation in 2016.

Since joining the NFL as the 31st player of choice in the 2017 draft, Foster has missed 32 games in three seasons.
