Another day, another massive patch for Call of Duty, though this time, for just one platform, which players there might not enjoy.
If you’ve played Modern Warfare or Warzone, you may have encountered the wild glitch that turns your weapons or sometimes objects in the environment into stinging monstrosities. Well, that’s just fixed in what would be a very small, rap patch, but there was a problem.
The patch is just 1.2 GB on PS4, and somewhere between 0.88 GB and 1.83 GB on PC, depending on whether you are Modern Warfare or not.
On Xbox One though? You are greeted with a 66 GB patch, about double the patch size for the entire season 5, when those are 30 GB patches al the subject of much mockery in the community for its massive size. The patch is two-thirds the size of Warzone itself.
No, this is not something you did wrong, this is a problem between Infinity Ward and Xbox, as they explain in the patch notes:
“Due to an unpredictable bug in Microsoft’s delivery process, this download requires Xbox users to download files they already have, but it does NOT affect the overall installation size. We work closely with Microsoft to ensure that future updates are smaller. “
If you are worried about your total game space size, you should still end up with the following size for the different parts of the game:
Warzone only: 99.5 GB
Modern warfare and warzone: 183 GB
It remains confusing that a game that is just a single Battle Royale card is almost 100 GB, and the ‘full game’ is almost 200 GB, about a half hard drive for most players with 500 GB systems approaching 400 GB available have space. While Infinity Ward has tried to reduce the footprint of the game over time, it has not done so well.
We are also approaching the debut of the next Call of Duty, Black Ops Cold War, this fall, and I’m starting to wonder how big dat game will be. Optimistically I would think it would be no smaller than 100 GB if it had the traditional campaign, multiplayer and zombie mode we expect. So if you do not want to give up Modern Warfare on your hard drive, you will spend 300 GB plus on Call of Duty, if not more. That’s wild.
Both PS5 and Xbox Series X will come with 1TB hard drives, doubling the standard of the launch of the latest generation of consoles, but it remains to be seen if games will continue to get bigger and bigger to fit, as has been the trend . This should stop somewhere, but Call of Duty is experiencing more GB bloat than one, both some patch downloads and general hard disk space.
