A statement from Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenny said Monday’s incident killed Verter Valce Les in West Philadelphia.
“I have seen a video of this tragic incident and it presents difficult questions that must be answered,” Kenney said, noting that he spoke with Wallace’s family on Monday.
Police Commissioner Daniel Outlo said he was fully committed to a full investigation and was “outraged by the community” when he went to the scene after the shooting.
“I have directed the officer involved in the shooting investigation unit to initiate an investigation,” Outlo said in a statement. “I know the video of the incident raises a lot of questions. Residents are confident that these questions will be fully addressed by the investigation.”
What the police said led to the shooting
“Responding officers took the testimony of a man on this block. They immediately saw that he had a knife and was branding it, and forgiving him incorrectly,” the Philadelphia Police Sergeant said. Eric Gripp told KYW.
Cell phone video recorded from inside a nearby vehicle captured the final moments of the confrontation. Wallace can be seen walking around the car parked on the first side, from one side to the other.
As the video shows, a woman appears to be trying to intervene to help two male police officers on the street when they show guns in front of them. As Wallace walks down the street around a parked car, the two officers can be seen walking towards him, backing up.
Several shots were fired rather than firing at police.
Grip told KYW that an officer took Wallace in his police cruiser to Presbyterian Hospital Hospital, “where he unfortunately died of his injuries.”
Witness Murris Holloway told KYW that he and others in the neighborhood had requested a knife drop with lace lace and that he did not want the man who called the police to be killed.
“Don’t shoot him in the leg or shoot him at all,” Holloway said.
Police have not released any information about the condition of the police officers.
According to KYW, John Lodge, president of Police Lodge # 5, tells everyone to “wait for the investigation to be completed and to weaken the police department.”
Thirty officers, including 1, were injured in the truck crash
Most of the injured officers were hit by projectiles, but at least one “was hit by a pickup truck – her broken leg and several other injuries,” police said, according to WPVI.
The officer was taken to hospital. The other 29 wounded officers were treated and released.
In addition, five police vehicles were vandalized, and several industries across the city were looted, police said.
At least 10 people were arrested.
As the police investigation progressed, the city’s top leaders pledged to stay in touch with Wallace’s family.
The mayor, Kenny, said, “I … will listen to their concerns first and continue to answer their questions as long as I am able.” “I look forward to a speedy and transparent resolution for the sake of Mr. Valace Les, his family, officials and Philadelphia.”
