Walmart is turning some of its parking lots into cinemas for the summer as the film industry struggles amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The retail giant is converting 160 of its parking lots in the United States to drive-in movies. These theaters will open in early August and will remain open until October. The Walmart Drive-In will feature movies slated by Tribeca Enterprises, the company behind the Tribeca Film Festival, which recently released a series of summer movies to bring movies, music, and sporting events to as many tickets as possible in the US. Walmart has not disclosed whether attendees will have to pay an admission price. However, before each entrance screening, Walmart says it will sell concessions for moviegoers, who can order online to pick them up on the sidewalk before the movie’s screening. Theaters tend to make a good chunk of their profits from dealerships, so Walmart could continue to lead the industry.
Movie theater chains have had financial problems during the pandemic. Chains like AMC and Regal are trying to reopen so they can make money again, through major blockbuster releases including Christopher Nolan Beginning and the live-action remake of Mulan, keep delaying you. While movie theaters have experienced a sharp decline, movie theaters have seen an increase in popularity due to their contactless nature.
