Beach lovers in South Carolina experienced “Sharknado” in real life this week when a huge bird was caught on video flying through the air, carrying what many believed to be a shark in its claws.
The video, captured by Ashley White, a Tennessee native, last week and shared on Tracking Sharks’ Twitter account, shows the eagle-shaped bird flying over Myrtle Beach, carrying its impressive catch as it moves and tries to escape. White tweeted that he took the video from the 17th floor of the building he was staying in.
The video has racked up tens of millions of views, and even The Asylum, the studio behind the movie “Sharknado,” tweeted about it. “How many of you knew that a Sharknado would come later?” wrote
Ed Piotrowski, WPDE’s chief meteorologist, shared White’s images on Facebook, joking that some people thought the duo was a condor and great white shark. Tracking Sharks asked their community if they could identify the creatures, and Twitter users have been testing all week.
Conjectures came from experts, identifying the bird of prey as a osprey and the fish as a ladybug, not a shark. Others thought that the fish could be an Atlantic Spanish mackerel. All three creatures can be found in the region.
