Occasionally, information is relayed to us here at The Daily Norseman, which is why we scratch our heads. This is one of those cases.
The folks at BetOnline have put together a list of which team the current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will play in 2021. Prescott had the Cowboys put the franchise tag on him and the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement long-term before the start of this season, so the speculative aspect of this makes sense.
Than it doesn’t It makes perfect sense that the Minnesota Vikings are among the favorites to sign Prescott for the 2021 season.
BetOnline has the Indianapolis Colts as favorites at 6 to 1, and the Chicago Bears just behind them at 7 to 1. Then there are the Vikings, who are listed by the Los Angeles Chargers with odds of 8 to 1.
When you look at those four teams, the Vikings who are among those favorites doesn’t make sense. Frankly, the Chargers don’t make sense either. The Colts just brought in Philip Rivers, who is closer to the end of his career than the beginning. Chicago has the Mitchell Trubisky / Nick Foles “battle” as a quarterback, so it makes sense that they’re there, too. The Chargers just recruited a young quarterback, and I think they would give him a shot before going after Prescott.
Then there are the Vikings, who only extended the Kirk Cousins contract to bring it under Minnesota control until 2022. The implication here is that the Vikings would go after Prescott and, presumably, trade Cousins somewhere.
I honestly don’t know why anyone would think Vikings would do that. Obviously, the team really likes the cousins, and they have designed a system around Cousins’ strengths that they will continue to keep in place with Gary Kubiak as the offensive coordinator. The only way the “Vikings sign Dak Prescott and trade Kirk’s cousins” makes sense if the Vikings hit rock bottom this season, Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer end up being fired, and a large-scale cleanup takes place.
And, let’s be honest. . .is Dak Prescott Really an improvement over the Kirk cousins? I would say it is not. I’m sure people won’t agree with that assessment, but I’m not sure what Prescott has shown would lead people to believe it would be an update. You would probably also want more money than Cousins is programmed to make, which would make a Cousins-for-Prescott exchange even less wise, IMO.
Obviously, this is all just speculation right now, as the 2020 season has to unfold before any of this can happen anyway. But someone presented the possibility, so we thought we would say something about it.
