With the start of the season drawing near and both the head coach and general manager entering the final year of their contracts, the Minnesota Vikings had to make a decision about whether to let the men who run their soccer team in and out of the field withstand a season of “lame duck”. On Friday, at least half of that problem has been fixed.
After what Warren told him a few days ago, the Vikings and head coach Mike Zimmer finalized a contract extension Friday that will keep Zimmer on the Minnesota sideline for the 2023 season.
Zimmer became the Vikings’ head coach before the 2014 season, and in his six years in Minnesota he has compiled the third-best winning percentage in team history. His .599 mark only beats Bud Grant (.621) and Dennis Green (.610).
With Zimmer’s contract officially terminated, attention is now turned to General Manager Rick Spielman. Spielman and Zimmer have had their contracts pretty close since Zimmer came to town, and while Spielman has had his mistakes here and there, he’s also managed to build and maintain a pretty talented roster over the course of the past few years. Nothing has been said about whether a contract extension is in the works for the Rickspeak master, but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t.
In any case, congratulations to Mike Zimmer on the extension of his contract to remain the head coach of his Minnesota Vikings!
