Bryson Dechambeau collapsed for centuries on Friday at the Memorial Tournament.
In his first tournament since winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic two weeks ago, DeChambeau was sitting at +1 with four holes to play in the second round. With the cut line hovering around +3, DeChambeau only needed to play fair to make it to the weekend.
Instead, it fell apart.
At par 5 # 15, DeChambeau’s momentum took a wide turn, forcing him to take a fall and left him with an awkward and blind second shot from deep.
While other players could have simply chosen to lie back and play from there, DeChambeau decided to do it, pulling out his 3 woods and waving with all his might. He sent his ball flying just beyond a fence some distance from the green, settling out of bounds.
At this point, other players could have taken their lumps, realized the error of their ways, and decided to escape and do their best to survive until the weekend.
DeChambeau decided to take the “Tin Cup” path, pulling out his 3 wood once more to give him another chance.
Out of limits.
Still on the road, DeChambeau was now on his seventh shot. He went for it again. When the ball left the club, DeChambeau seemed to believe he had been put back by OB, admitting it was time to go to bed and get on with his day.
Fortunately, Bryson was wrong – this one had finally landed in a playable location.

The drama would not stop there. Once DeChambeau got to where his shots had landed, it seemed for a second as if his first shot out of the woods was playable.

After a rules official approached to explain that the ball was still out due to its position on the fence, DeChambeau requested a second opinion.

The second rules official agreed with the first: DeChambeau’s ball was out of bounds.
After jumping onto the green and hitting two putts, DeChambeau would come out of the hole with a 10. When his ball finally settled in the hole, DeChambeau had to do some mental calculations to figure out what number to write on his scorecard.
Bryson’s 10 pushed him from +1 over the weekend to +6, well above the cut line; For the first time since January, DeChambeau would not be playing over the weekend.
On Twitter, fans were amazed at the DeChambeau crisis.

DeChambeau was clearly not satisfied with his collapse. When Bryson came off the green, his caddy played a small defense between his golf player and the cameras.

DeChambeau’s new muscle has broken golf to some extent, but moments like his collapse at n. ° 15 show that a long journey alone cannot lead to victory every week on the Tour.
