Victor Hedman tries to break metal rail after suffering an ankle injury

Victor Hedman was injured Saturday in the first period of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s final game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

In what appeared to be a seemingly innocent play, the Norris Trophy finalist, alternating from skating forward to backward, let his right ankle out and fell awkwardly onto the ice. After lying on the ice for several seconds, he slowly shot off the ice.

Hedman tested his ankle out at the next timeout. After speaking with assistant athletic trainer Mikey Poirer, Hedman got up and limped to the tunnel.

When he was there, Hedman took out his anger on the Scotiabank Arena railing, hitting it several times with frustrated stick.

The lightning later announced that Hedman would not return.

This is the second year since Hedman had problems with an injury in the playoffs. Last year, Hedman struggled with an upper body injury in the stretch and played only in two of Tampa’s four games against the Blue Jackets in the first round.
