The history of smartphones is shrouded in horrible phone names. Acer Liquid Zest Plus, HTC Uncle, LG G8X ThinkQ, iPhone 11 Pro Max, Sony Xperia 1 II. And of course, the sleek display of the legendary Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, buzzwords, numbers and letters, somehow making it the full name of one of the best Android phones of 2011.
But almost nine years to date, there’s a new champion for the worst Android phone name of all time: this Newly announced Verizon Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition 5G Ultra Wideband (or S20 FE 5G UW for short).
Samsung Galaxy S20 Fe 5G UW: What is it, and why is it surprising? How do I get one? Are there any bions?

Taken individually, each piece of name means something. “Verizon,” a carrier that will sell a specific type of phone. “Samsung,” manufacturer. The “Galaxy,” branding Samsung uses for its consumer hardware. “S20,” a sub-brand for its 2020 flagship smartphone. “5G,” Since Samsung began adding the networking standard label to network names last year and still hasn’t stopped, the entire S20 line supports it.
Things are starting to break down from “Fan Edition”, the special name that Samsung has assigned to this cheap iteration of its phones. It’s a moniker used by Samsung to sell the restored Galaxy Note 7 devices left over from the infamous explosive battery battery incident in 2016.
Finally, there is the Ultra Wideband / UW label, which is not an indication that this phone is trying to create an anime smiley emoticon. Ver lata, it has a label at the end to indicate support for Verizon’s MMWave 5G network – which the company brands as “Ultra Wideband” 5G, because nothing is easier when it comes to branding. That UW label appears especially on many Verizon 5G phones as MMW support is still very rare on many 5G devices, which device manufacturers only need to make bspoke (and often precier) models for the Verizon, which is currently Only MMwave offers 5G.
The newly named champion has come a long way to get to this point – until the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition 5G Ultra Widebud starts to sound louder. But if the history of smartphones isn’t anything to go by, it will still be a matter of time before some more long, more ridiculous phone calls come to take the crown.
