The University of Georgia will have a major quarterback battle when fall practice opens later this summer, following the NCAA’s surprising decision to award the former caller for the USC signal. JT Daniels immediate eligibility before the 2020 season. The former five-star prospect announced on Twitter that he had gained his appeal with the NCAA and that he hopes to compete this season.
Daniels started 11 of 12 games as a true freshman in 2018, where he completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 2,672 yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He ended that season with a bang, throwing for more than 300 yards against the Trojans’ two biggest rivals, UCLA and Notre Dame. Daniels started and was expected to thrive under new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Graham Harrell last fall, but suffered a knee injury that ended the season early, giving way to Kedon Slovis.
Daniels will compete with Jamie Newman for the Georgia QB1 spot.
“If Daniels gets an immediate NCAA eligibility waiver, there is likely to be fierce competition for the initial job,” Dawgs247 analyst Jake Rowe wrote this summer in his position outlook. “Newman is older and has spent more time with the team, but Daniel is a talented player with a lot of experience under his belt. Needless to say, things will shake if he doesn’t get the exemption, but if he does, the benefits are many. .
