Seattle police withdrew to an compound early Sunday.just hours after declaring a riot during the large protests in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, near where weeks earlier people established a “busy protest zone” that spanned several blocks.
Some protesters lingered after officers entered the department’s East Precinct around 1 a.m., but most left soon after, according to a video posted online.
Authorities said stones, bottles, fireworks and mortars were thrown at officers as they attempted to clean up the area using sudden explosions and pepper spray over the course of several hours.
Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best called for peace at a nightly press conference and told reporters. had not seen American agents sent by the Trump administration to the city at Saturday’s protest.
Through Twitter, police said they arrested at least 45 people for assaults on officers, obstruction, and lack of dispersal. Twenty-one officers were mostly lightly injured.
