US, China postpone trade talks over weekend

The US and China are sending out talks scheduled for the weekend aimed at monitoring progress at the six-month mark of their phase-one trade agreement, people familiar with the matter said.

Chinese Vice Prime Minister Liu He is due to hold a video conference with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, but it has been rescheduled indefinitely, according to the people. The USTR bureau did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The talks never made it to an official public calendar in Washington or Beijing, but the South China Morning Post reported earlier Friday that they were set for Saturday. Earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that information on high-level talks was “timely.”

The top economic adviser to US President Donald Trump, Larry Kudlow, said on Thursday that the trade agreement is going well, reiterated remarks he had made earlier in the week, saying the protagonists had a phone call coming to check the deal, and dismissed concerns that growing tensions between the two countries could jeopardize the pact.

The postponement was previously reported by Reuters, who accused skull problems.
