Upstate NY mayor fired with crack cocaine after short chase: Police


The mayor of a small New York village was arrested Tuesday on charges of having crack cocaine, police said.

Massena Mayor Tim Crier Rear was busted after a brief police operation in a village near the Canadian border at about 12:25 p.m., officials said.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said the 55-year-old carrier was targeted as part of a covert investigation into drug sales and possession.

He is accused of throwing a gram cracker out of a passenger window while fleeing from the police.

He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence and failure to comply with a police officer.

The mayor was arraigned remotely on Tuesday and ordered to reappear at a later date by Morristown Town Justice James Phillips.

Career has been mayor of Massena since 2014. Prior to that, he was the head of the Massena Police Department.
