It’s been rumored for a while now, but now a new Doritos promotion has seemingly confirmed the title of the next Call of Duty game, along with a possible launch window for the long-awaited war shooter.
Having entered the second phase of the subtitle in its 17-year history, the next CoD will be titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, as evidenced by TheGamingRevolution in a tweet.
These are the two promotional images of Doritos Double XP that I previously received from an anonymous source from Call of Duty 2020 Black Ops Cold War. I was too concerned about copyright issues to post them before, but since CharlieIntel shared them, I guess they are safe. pic.twitter.com/yvvjH7CvKU July 26, 2020
The leak seems to corroborate previous reports that the game would revert to the original Black Ops settings and time period – the game is believed to focus primarily on the Vietnam War, allowing players to play not just from the perspective of the US South Vietnamese and Viet Cong.
When can we expect it to launch?
While the Doritos promotion itself doesn’t explicitly reveal a Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War release date, there are plenty of things that can be gleaned from its fine print.
The promotion, which starts on October 5, 2020 and offers players double XP for a year, is very similar to a previous promotion for last year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which started on October 1, 2019 before the launch of the game. later that month on October 25.
While that’s not exactly a confirmation that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be out at the end of October this year, developer Treyarch and publisher Activision are most likely planning an equivalent launch release for the upcoming game.
Possible obstacles
Of course, there are a number of variables that could throw a spanner in pre-launch work.
Leaving aside the pandemic that may have slowed down game development, new Call of Duty titles have traditionally been announced much earlier than this (generally around June in time for E3, which was canceled this year).
Now that the cat is out of the bag, though, we look forward to an official Activision announcement coming soon, possibly alongside a brilliant revealing trailer. We will keep you informed as more information arrives.
