Universal Studios cancels Halloween Horror Nights for 2020

(CNN) – It seems that not even Halloween is immune to the curse that is the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Friday, Universal Studios announced that its parks in Florida and California would not hold their annual Halloween Horror Nights events in 2020.

Halloween-themed events have become a popular staple in amusement parks. But with its emphasis on taking people into dark, tight spaces to provide the chills and atmospheric emotions, such events would be particularly difficult to carry out safely in a pandemic where social distancing is paramount.

Orlando and Hollywood

A post on Universal’s media website said “Universal Orlando Resort will focus exclusively on operating its theme parks for guests during the day, using the improved health and safety procedures that already exist.”

Meanwhile, Universal Studios Hollywood in California has yet to reopen, nor does it have a set date.

“We know this decision will disappoint our fans and guests. We are also disappointed,” said Universal’s announcement. “But we hope to create an incredible event in 2021.”

Contrast between California and Florida

For major theme parks, California is proving to be a more difficult state to reopen than Florida, which has taken a faster approach to reopening its economy.

This is happening despite the fact that Florida has been particularly affected by spikes in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks.

At noon on Friday, Florida recorded 1,873 cases per 100,000 people. Only four states were higher.
