United States Sees More Than 70,000 New Coronavirus Cases For Second Consecutive Day

The United States saw more than 70,000 new cases of coronavirus for the second consecutive day on Friday, with 71,600 new cases reported across the country. There was a daily high of 77,300 new confirmed cases Thursday, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.

The total number of confirmed cases in the US now exceeds 3.6 million, and more than 139,000 people have died from the virus.

Across the south, doctors on the front lines are feeling the dire situation, Michael George reported for “CBS This Morning: Saturday.”

“It doesn’t stop, and we don’t know when it will stop right now,” said Andy Wilhelm, a critical care physician at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

In Florida, health officials expect better news after days of record numbers of cases. The intensive care units in eight of the 25 Miami-Dade County hospitals are full.

Health officials say what happens next is up to the public.

“We hope against hope that people get the message, that they are changing their behavior,” said Dr. Aileen Marty, an infectious disease specialist in Miami. “If we don’t see that by Monday, Tuesday, then yes, we may have to enact additional measures.”

The White House coronavirus task force put 18 states, including Florida, in what it calls the “red zone,” and recommends that red zone counties require masks, according to a CBS task force document obtained. News but that was not made public.

More than half of the states already have masking mandates. In some places, the police apply fines to people who do not use them.

In Georgia, however, also considered a red zone, Governor Brian Kemp agrees to fight mask requirements. Earlier this week he explicitly prohibited cities and counties in the state of ordering people to wear masks in public.

“While we all agree that wearing a mask is effective, I am sure that Georgians do not need a mandate to do the right thing,” he said.

Some places that are seeing increasing cases have rescinded orders that allowed companies to reopen. Among them is California, which has seen a surge in the Los Angeles area.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Friday he is maintaining public schools In 32 counties they closed when classes resumed in August, forcing millions of students to continue distance learning.

The situation, meanwhile, continues to improve in New York. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that the state has seen its lowest number of hospitalizations for COVID-19, 743, since mid-March.

He said Friday that New York City, once the epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, was cleared to enter its final phase of reopening on Monday after closing four months ago.
