United Airlines will furlough 16,000 employees

In a new memo to its employees, United (UAL) As many as 1,370 employees will be laid off when pay cuts linked to the federal bailout expire on October 16, United officials told reporters Wednesday, less than half of the airline’s July furlough forecast, with early retirees accepting or volunteering 7,400. Thanks to employees departure and indefinite number who take unpaid leave.

United’s memo calls furlough a “heart-wrenching” last resort, but the airline “can’t keep up with the staffing level, which we significantly increase the flight schedule.”

The president of United Airlines says the airline industry could be halved to survive.

“We expect things not to get back to normal until the vaccine is developed and widely administered,” a United executive told a briefing call to reporters. He insisted that the Care Act could stall furloughs with the addition of parole protection – and the airline – which has been in contact with the White House and Congress – would not even see the new bailout potential.

The memo reads, “For clarity, an extension would be one thing that would prevent involuntary furloughs on October 1 and hopefully delay any potential impact on employees by early 2021.”
