Another school year is drawing to a close – and while some institutions are holding their own classes, others are letting their students return … including UNG, which is already proving to be a COVID nightmare, even before day 1.
The first day of classes at the University of North Georgia begins on Monday, when students return to campus. Of course, that means a smart ton of 18 to 20-somethings cursed in the city over the weekend and did what college kids do … grandpa in the tight and party the night away.
Watch this video of some dozens, if not hundreds, of students having to cross the street from what appears to be an outlying residential area. There are massive crowds as far as the eye can see, and of course … no one distances and no one wears masks.
It also does not look like there is a police or campus security in sight – then again, if the housing is off-campus … it’s probably a university student-run area, so maybe no one thinks about it.
What we humans – especially the faculty – will care about here in a few weeks if symptoms can set in … is how much of the student body is starting to get sick, and what this rager can do right out of the gate with it. At this rate, things could quickly get ugly.
UNG has said it is committed to providing a safe environment for students this fall semester, with new guidelines and precautionary measures in place. That’s all well and good when people are on campus, but when the kids leave … who can realistically control what they do?
It is a difficult question, and one many other schools that decide to reopen will have to wrestle with the school year starting again. Maybe online learning is not such a bad idea 🤷🏽♂️
