Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that 5 million hectares of agricultural land have been stolen in the country since independence. There are 7 million hectares of those lands in the country.

The president said this during a conversation with journalists from four television channels.

According to him, the remaining 2 million hectares in state ownership were transferred to the ownership of the united territorial communities for more effective management and income generation.

“We managed to transfer two million hectares to the UTO by my decree. And now they will be responsible for the use of this land, for filling the local budget. And this is correct”, emphasized Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Last week, the head of the state Geocadastre, Roman Leshchenko, said that more than 5 million hectares of agricultural land, which should be owned by the state, is privately owned. These lands became private property through illegal mechanisms.

At the end of March, Verkhovna Rada passed the law on the land market in Ukraine. The land market, according to the adopted document, should start operating on July 1, 2021.
