Ukraine and the United States lack interaction on “some important things, discoveries,” says Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy considers Ukraine to be the same “space state” as the United States. He told The New York Times about this in an interview that was recorded on December 16, the transcript of the conversation was published on December 19 by the website of the Office of the President.
“We are a space state, the United States of America too, we can remember the same 90s when we had a spacecraft flight with our first Ukrainian cosmonaut [Леонидом] Kadenyuk, and then, together with the United States, with partners, a case was being prepared, “the president said.
He noted that over the years “there have been no more discoveries of this kind in science, art, technology, medicine, such modern global things.”
“This is where the talents of both states must move,” Zelensky emphasized.
He believes Ukraine and the United States have long lacked cooperation on “some important things, discoveries.”
The first Ukrainian cosmonaut Leonid Kadenyuk in 1995 was selected for the group of cosmonauts of the National Space Agency of Ukraine. He was trained at the US National Aerospace Agency, and in the period from November 19 to December 5, 1997, he conducted a space flight on the US shuttle Columbia on the STS-87 mission.
Kadenyuk died on January 31, 2018 in Kiev’s “Tsarskoe Selo” park while jogging.
Ukraine does not have its own cosmodrome or orbiting satellites.
