The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Thursday, November 19, while he was in the Feofania hospital, where he is being treated for coronavirus, held a video meeting with the ambassadors of the G7 countries and the European Union, reported the press service of your office.
The conversation was also joined by the head of the OP, Andrey Ermak, and NABU Director Artem Sytnik.
The meeting was dedicated to the issues of overcoming the crisis, caused by the Constitutional Court by its latest decisions, the operation of the NABU and the implementation of an effective judicial reform.
“I did not categorically accept the recent decision of the Constitutional Court to abolish some of the provisions of the anti-corruption legislation. In fact, it” zeroed out “the entire anti-corruption system,” Zelensky said.
He noted that the main task of the Ukrainian authorities was to ensure the continued activity of the anti-corruption bodies and to restore the functioning of the electronic declaration system.
The head of state recalled that he recently had a detailed conversation on this subject with the president of the Venice Commission, Gianni Buquicchio, who offered the commission’s experience in this difficult situation.
Zelensky presented concrete steps to overcome the constitutional crisis. Among them, the restoration before the end of the year of criminal responsibility for lying in the statements, the return of all control functions to the NAPK and the resolution of the matter by the Constitutional Court.
On the other hand, he stressed that the government of Ukraine faces a more strategic task: the reform of the judicial system.
The G7 ambassadors said they support the president’s efforts to implement judicial reform. Diplomats also fully supported the reaction of the Ukrainian authorities to the decision of the Constitutional Court.
The parties agreed that it is necessary to guarantee a fair and transparent selection procedure for the new judges of the Constitutional Court.
Separately, participants discussed the threats faced by NABU through the Constitutional Court decision.
“The decision of the Constitutional Court does not cancel the creation and operation of NABU, does not limit the work of NABU detectives, and does not call into question NABU’s status as a law enforcement agency. We guarantee that after December 16, the director NABU will remain in office, “said the president.
Earlier, the EU said that the current situation with the Constitutional Court can be resolved through comprehensive judicial reform.
