We can’t lower prices, we can raise wages, Zelensky believes

Ukrainians will feel an increase in the level of the minimum wage, as the official salaries of state employees are indexed from it, the president said.

The state in a market economy cannot set food prices, but increases the minimum wage so that the income of citizens increases. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a trip to the Ternopil region, the presidential office said.

Responding to a question from journalists, the head of state pointed out that some experts say that raising the minimum wage is a big mistake.

“But ordinary people who live in Ukraine and who are mostly taxpayers are happy. As for the minimum wage, 5,000 UAH is nothing. We have increased as much as we could since 1 September. From 1 January it will be 6,000 UAH. , and from July 1 or August – 6500 UAH, “emphasized Zelensky.

According to him, Ukrainians will feel an increase in the level of the minimum wage, as the official wages of state employees are indexed from it.

He also noted that many factors influence the cost of products, including weather conditions, harvest volume, balance of exports and imports, exchange rates, etc.

“Regarding the reduction of prices, we have a market economy. The state cannot” break “prices and companies,” said the president.

As previously reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law to increase the minimum wage to 5000 UAH as of September 1, 2020.
