The Israeli government has asked Ukraine to impose restrictions on Hasidic pilgrims arriving in Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky regrets that this has had unpleasant consequences for the pilgrims.
He said this in an interview with The Jerusalem Post.
Protecting the health of foreign guests and Ukrainian citizens remains a top priority during a pandemic, he said. Zelensky also says that visitors from Israel and from around the world will always be welcome in Ukraine and in Uman in particular.
“Unfortunately, this year, due to COVID-19, at the request of Israel, we had to apply a strict policy to protect the safety of both Ukrainian citizens and our visitors from all over the world,” Zelensky said.
Note that every year between 30 and 50 thousand Hasidim come to Uman from different countries. However, this year, the Cabinet of Ministers and the State Commission for Safety and Technogenic and Environmental Emergencies prohibited Hasidic pilgrims from visiting Uman. The reason for this was the coronavirus.
Recall that Arsen Avakov said that this year about 3,000 pilgrims will visit the celebration of Rosh Hashanah Uman.
During the pilgrimage to Uman, a hospital was deployed for Hasidim with COVID-19.
