Zelensky awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to the crew of the crashed UIA plane

Ukraine’s highest title “for heroism and selfless actions displayed in the line of duty” was given to the commander of the aircraft, pilots and flight attendants.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conferred the title of Hero of Ukraine with the award of the Order of the Gold Star to the crew members of Ukraine International Airlines JSC flight PS752 who died in a plane crash in Iran in January. 2020, reports the press service of the Office of the President.

Zelensky signed the corresponding decree No. 600/2020 on December 29.

“For the heroism and selfless actions shown in the line of duty, the title of Hero of Ukraine was posthumously awarded to the aircraft commander Vladimir Ga poneko, the aircraft commander – instructor pilot Alexei Naumkin, co-pilot Sergei Khomenko, assistants senior flight attendants Yekaterina Statnik and Igor Matykov, flight attendants Denis, Maria Mikityuk, Valeria Ovcharuk and Yulia Sologub, “the press service said.

Recall that the Boeing 737-800 UIA, which took off from Tehran to Kiev, was shot down by the Iranian air defense. 176 people died: citizens of Iran, Ukraine, Canada, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden and Afghanistan. Iranian authorities said the air defense mistook the plane for an “enemy target.”

It was also reported that the title of Hero of Ukraine was posthumously awarded to the CEO of the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau, Alexander Degtyarev.
