Zelensky advocated granting credit vacations to small and micro businesses

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Prime Minister Denis Shmygal discussed the state of the country’s economy and the operation of programs that aim to help companies during the quarantine period.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, during a meeting on preventing the spread of the coronavirus, called for the provision of credit vacations to small and micro-enterprises. This was announced on May 11 by the website of the head of state.

The President raised the question of the state of the Ukrainian economy and the operation of programs aimed at assisting companies during the quarantine period.

“We discussed a series of credit support programs for small and micro-businesses, because they are the ones who suffer the most from quarantine. We must help them now and after quarantine so that they can recover quickly. We have to offer them so-called credit vacations,” Zelensky emphasized.

Prime Minister Denis Shmygal said the government has created all the prerequisites for the full work of the updated program “Affordable Loans 5-7-9%”. The head of government also mentioned another program: New Money, which will allow entrepreneurs to obtain loans at a low interest rate.

“These programs will help Ukrainian companies to resist the difficult economic conditions caused by the epidemic and will also guarantee the preservation of jobs. The main condition of the programs is the preservation of at least 80% of jobs in small and micro enterprises” Shmygal said.

On May 6, a protest demonstration by Ukrainian businessmen was held in the center of Kiev. They stated that it is impossible to limit the work of quarantined small and medium-sized companies.

April 29, businessmen gathered near the cabinet. They demanded that the government allow the work of small and micro-enterprises in compliance with sanitary regulations, and that it guarantee equal requirements for quarantine work for all, including well-known retail chains. Health Minister Maxim Stepanov criticized the demonstration and declared that its participants put their health at risk.

The quarantine in Ukraine is valid from March 12. Due to the spread of coronavirus infection, COVID-19 banned massive events, closed educational institutions, shopping malls, stores (except supermarkets and pharmacies), restaurants, cafes and bars, gyms, beauty salons, and nightclubs, suspended flights with other countries. The government quarantine exit plan for Ukraine consists of five stages.
