Yanukovich arrested in absentia for two months

The Kiev Pechersky District Court arrested in absentia the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovich in the case of executions in Maidan from February 18 to 20, 2014. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the transmission of the YouTube court session of the “Judicial Branch of Ukraine”.

Yanukovich’s lawyers demanded not to consider a preventive measure, as the terms of the pre-trial investigation had expired, and also requested that prosecutors be fired for their alleged bias. The defense also demanded that Yanukovich himself be brought to court, but the lawyers’ requests were rejected.

“The request (the indictment, – ed.) To satisfy. Apply a restrictive measure with respect to the suspect Viktor Yanukovich in the form of detention within the pre-trial investigation period without bail,” said the decision of Judge Aleksey Sokolov .

Recall that last week Yanukovych was arrested in absentia in case of usurpation of power. In this criminal proceeding, the circumstances of September to October 2010 are investigated, when Yanukovich illegally increased the amount of power.

The attorney general’s office responded to the decision on the absent arrest, saying it allows him to begin the extradition process of the former president of the Russian Federation.

It should be noted that on January 24, 2019, Yanukovich was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison in case of high treason and complicity in conducting an aggressive war.
