Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca said it “voluntarily suspended” clinical trials of its coronavirus vaccine. This decision was made after a volunteer who was tested for the vaccine became ill.
Write about this AFP.
The company, which is developing the drug with the University of Oxford, is leading the global race for a COVID-19 vaccine.
The trials have been suspended to allow an independent committee to review the vaccine safety data.
“This is a routine action that should occur whenever a potentially unexplained disease is found in one of the trials. While investigating, it ensures that the integrity of the trials is maintained,” the company said in a statement.
Pauses during clinical trials are not uncommon, but this is believed to be the first time a coronavirus vaccine has been tested.
AstraZeneca is one of nine companies currently in the final stages of vaccine trials. On August 31, the company began recruiting 30,000 volunteers in the United States to participate in the trials.
It was previously reported that the European Commission signed the first contract for the purchase of 300 million doses of coronavirus with the developer AstraZeneca.
We will remember in the WHO declared that the massive vaccination against COVID-19 in the world is not expected before mid-2021.
