In the UK, a 32-year-old woman with thermal stage cancer was completely cured thanks to a revolutionary method of fighting the disease.
Patient Helen Wynn Hughes was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2018 when she was pregnant with her third child. Doctors found a tumor the size of a grapefruit on his chest, writes the Daily Mail.
In the fall of 2019, doctors told him that the cancer was no longer responding to treatment and had spread to the bones, liver and lungs.
“They advised me to prepare the children for the worst,” he recalls.
The British woman was then offered to try CAR-T cell therapy, which had only recently been approved by the UK’s National Health Service. The method was the last hope of the patient.
Hughes spent five weeks at a cancer center in Manchester, England. He pointed out the side effects of the treatment, particularly temporary memory loss. After therapy, the patient waited six months for the results of the treatment.
“When the doctors said that I had recovered, we all burst into tears. In the end, the cancer completely disappeared. I prepared for the worst, but CAR-T cell therapy saved my life,” he said.
CAR T cell therapy uses a chimeric antigen receptor to recognize malignant cells and destroy them. It is a protein that combines antibody fragments that selectively bind to certain antigens and domains that activate the immune system. T cells from a patient are harvested and genetically modified to carry the chimeric antigen receptor CAR on their surface, which binds to the CD133 protein on glioblastoma cells. After modification, they are reintroduced into the patient’s body.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko’s adviser promised to take personal control over the case of a scam artist selling counterfeit cancer drugs in Ukraine and remained free.
