The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adanom Ghebreyesus, called on the world community to strengthen health systems and prepare for new pandemics and emergencies.
The WHO chief announced it during a video speech on Saturday, December 26.
Tedros Adan Ghebreyesus recorded a video message in honor of the International Day of Anti-Epidemic Preparedness, which will be celebrated for the first time this year on December 27, in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution adopted on December 7. The purpose of the events that will take place on this day is to draw the public’s attention to the problems of epidemic prevention.
He turned to the world community, saying that it is already difficult to imagine that a year ago nobody knew anything about the coronavirus. But “over the years there have been many reports, reviews and recommendations that say that the world is not prepared for a pandemic.”
He also noted that the pandemic has shown “a close relationship between the health of people, animals and the planet.” And this is not the last epidemic in the world, so it is necessary to develop medical systems and direct efforts to prevent emergencies. At the same time, it is necessary to consider “the critical interactions between humans and animals, as well as the existential threats associated with climate change.”
Recall that a new type of British coronavirus has already been found in eight European countries.
It was also reported that more than 80 million people have already been infected with the coronavirus throughout the pandemic.
