WHO named the only drug that helps treat COVID-19

Dexamethasone is the only drug that has been shown to be effective in treating patients with severe COVID-19.

This was announced by the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adan Ghebreyesus. The corresponding statement was posted on the organization’s website.

“To date, the corticosteroid dexamethasone remains the only therapeutic agent that has been shown to be effective against COVID-19 in seriously ill patients,” Gebreisus said.

He also noted that studies from the Solidarity Therapeutics Trial have shown that two other drugs used in the treatment of coronavirus, remdesivir and interferon, have little or no effect in preventing death from COVID-19 or reducing hospitalizations.

In addition, he noted that in June, the WHO stopped investigating the use of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19, and in July the study of the action of a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir was stopped.

Ghebreyesus added that there are many more ongoing trials of therapeutic agents identified in the COVID-19 Research and Development Roadmap.

As OBOZREVATEL reported:

  • Previously, British scientists from the University of Oxford concluded that dexamethasone reduced mortality in COVID-19 patients who were hooked up to a ventilator.

  • WHO Director General Tedros Adan Ghebreyesus hailed the results of clinical trials of dexamethasone in the treatment of COVID-19 as a scientific advance.

  • However, the WHO recommended caution when prescribing dexamethasone due to its side effects.
