Football.ua talks about Kolos’ future rival in the Europa League standings.

The 2019/20 campaign turned out to be phenomenal for Kovalevsky Kolos. For the first time in history we played in the Premier League, for the first time in history we finished in the top 6, for the first time in history we entered the European competition. To make this season even better, you must go through the selection sieve in these European cups. And the first obstacle on this path will be the Greek Aris, with whom Kolos will play in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.

History

The history of Aris goes back over a hundred years. The club was founded in 1914 in Thessaloniki and is named after the Greek god of war Ares. This was due to the two Balkan wars in 1912-1913, when Greece first fought the Ottoman Empire and later became involved in the war with Bulgaria. There is also a version that the name Aris was approved as opposed to Iraklis, which already existed in the city at the time, named after Hercules, who fought with Ares.

Aris has a large fan base in Greece and even beyond its borders, numbering over a million people. However, the great successes of the “yellow-blacks” were far behind: the last of the three championships was won in 1946 and the only Greek Cup in 1971.

Aris colors have been yellow-black throughout history. Yellow is associated with gold, which dominates the culture of the Greek province of Macedonia (not to be confused with the country of North Macedonia), and is also a reference to the Byzantine Empire, of which Thessaloniki was an important part.

The club celebrated its centenary in 2014 with almost the worst possible image: it was ranked 18th in the table, but due to financial problems it was sent to the third division of Greek football. After spending two seasons in the third and second divisions, Aris returned to the elite in 2018 and immediately took fifth place. In the last campaign he managed to repeat this result.

Coach

Aris is headed by the German Michael Jönning. As a footballer, he played for the modest Eintracht Kesfeld, Wilmsberg, Preussen Münster, Hammer, Dulmen and Pfullendorf, and in 2009 he began a career as an independent coach. In this position, Michael does better: Nuremberg, Hamburg, Vashash (Hungary), Magdeburg and, since 2019, Aris.

Enning’s main achievement is perhaps reaching the First Bundesliga with Nuremberg in 2009. However, things did not go well and in December of the same year he was fired. He came to Hamburg as Armin Feh’s assistant, but became the principal after his dismissal. A point from six games at the start of the 2011/2012 season marked another retirement for Michael.

Enning did a wonderful job on Vasha. At first, he avoided relegation with the club, and in the second season he took third place, which gave him the right to play in the first round of the Europa League qualification.

Michael Jenning, Aris

In November 2018, Jenning took the lead at 17th-place Magdeburg in the second Bundesliga, but that didn’t help the team. By contrast, Der Club finished 19th and relegated to the Third Bundesliga. Naturally, the contract with Jenning was not renewed.

Since October 2019, Michael leads Aris, which has taken him to fifth place in the Greek Championship. By club standards, a pretty good result.

Ukrainian trace

In Aris’ midfield, there are two well-known names to Ukrainian fans: Facundo Bertoglio and Bruno Gama.

In the case of Facundo Bertoglio, only the name is really familiar. The Argentine at the Dynamo was injured or on loan all the time. During the six years that Facundo belonged to the Dynamo, he played one match in the Ukrainian Cup and 4 matches in the Premier League. And of course, let’s not forget the 40 minutes of the Champions League qualifying round against Ghent.

In Greece, Bertoglio is doing better: 48 games, 8 goals, 7 assists in two seasons at Asteras and Lamia. Facundo now makes his third call to Hellas. He joined Aris in mid-August as a free agent.

Brunu Gama, FC Aris

Bruno Gama, of course, was much better at Dnipro: 9 goals and 12 assists in 56 UPL games in three years. After Ukraine, Deportivo and Alcorcón were in Gama’s career, and since 2018 he has played for Aris. 55 games in all tournaments, 15 goals and 4 assists – Kolos should clearly be wary of this guy.

Meetings with Ukrainian clubs

Aris has never played for Ukrainian clubs. Well, we hope the first pancake for the Greeks is lumpy.
