Our two plenipotentiaries in the Champions League group stage ended up in the so-called “groups of death”. It is at least silly to argue with this thesis: the champion and runner-up from Spain, and the same selection from Italy, and one of the most stable teams in Germany and clearly a progressive champion from Hungary.
However, even in these groups, in our opinion, it is possible to fight, at least, for the right to go to the Europa League in the spring, but in certain hands, and for the Champions League playoffs. Today we try to predict what awaits Mircea Lucescu’s team in the Champions League.

Dynamo’s group is slightly lighter than Shakhtar’s. Only Ferencvaros may seem nominally weaker than Borussia Mönchengladbach, but Sergei Rebrov’s team can become a true “dark horse” of the tournament, although at this point it is not worth making special bets for him. The Dynamo, if they hope to make noise in the Champions League after so many years of absence, must have a mandatory goal: six points against Ferencvaros, especially since Lucescu knows how to beat Rebrov’s teams even in the rivalry in the Premier League Ukrainian.
Next, let’s try to think strategically and with some optimism. The current Dynamo are able to act in an organized way and snatch the result even with a minimum of possibilities. Also, Georgy Buschan is clearly going through a good period in his career, who has a good interaction with the defense. This means that already in the first round against Juventus, Dynamo Kiev could well be aiming for victory, taking advantage of the lack of main star Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as the inexperience as a coach of ex-sentinel Lucescu Andrea Pirlo. In the end, beating Juve is a matter of honor for the Dynamo, who in much better years never managed to snatch victory in four games. Now seems to be the right time.

For the third round and the away game with Barcelona, the kievists can add 6 points in the advantage and in the status of group leader. The current Catalans are by no means a standard of stability, so they can and should take drinks with them, taking advantage of the fights within the club, the instability in the top management and a certain irritation of the main star
“Blaugranas” by Lionel Messi. A conditional victory at home over Barça could lead the Dynamo to the Champions League playoffs, which the Kyivans must approve on matchday six when they host Ferencváros. The Kiev team also has a good schedule (Barcelona, two days before the visit to Kiev, will have to play a difficult away game in the League against Atlético), which the experienced Lucescu must try to take advantage of to have fun again his own vanity and pampering the club president. Igor Surkis, who is already calculating the benefit of the decision to appoint a Romanian specialist as the team’s mentor.

The Lucescu team in his group is quite capable not only of local but also of real feat. And my optimism is dictated not only by the “rebirth” of the Kiev team in relation to the arrival of a new coach, but also by the apparent game problems of the two “core” teams in the group, Juve and Barça.
The Kievites will start with a match against the “Old Lady”. Ronaldo will not play for Juve, the restructuring of the Italian champions on a new methodological path is still underway, and in this “attraction” the new Juventus coach Pirlo clearly does not look like a giant. In general, a very suitable situation for the Dynamo, who are now on the move. I suppose that in this fight the Kievites will not lose at least. Or maybe they win outright.
In the second round, the White-Blues will visit Sergei Rebrov in Budapest. Despite the fact that the fight against the Dynamo will be principled for Fradi’s coach, the hosts will not win. For the simple reason that the people of Kiev are simply above the bar, both individually and as a team. Once again, if everything goes perfectly for the Dynamo, they can take three points to the Hungarian capital. And then there will be a double date with Barcelona. I remember that at one point such a “spark” ended with a total triumph of the people of Kiev. It is unlikely that the Dynamo can now repeat such an achievement, as Barça individually are clearly stronger now, but it seems that the Blaugrana’s game crisis has not disappeared even after Kuman’s arrival at the coaches’ bridge. In general, in this battle I bet on the Dynamo. Or three points against three.
The most difficult match of this stage will be played in Turin. If Juve’s problems persist, Pirlo’s student will hardly be able to surpass his teacher Lucescu. Well, on the last day of play the Dynamo are bound to beat Ferencvaros in their homeland.

If in Shakhtar’s group there are many options with the distribution of seats, here the picture is different. There are two clear leaders of the quartet, whose transfer cost is many times higher than that of the third and fourth teams. It is unlikely that anyone will be surprised that after the fourth round both Dynamo and Ferencvaros lose their chances of qualifying for the Champions League playoffs.
The hand-to-hand fight between Ronaldo and Messi is of little interest to us, it is unlikely that they can avoid them, but the Rebrov-Lucescu battle is very inspiring. The advantage of the Ukrainian specialist is that he has been working with the Hungarian club for several years and twice in a row he has led the team to the championship. The Romanian coach has 50 years of experience and rough diamonds on the side of the really cool Dynamo academy. And if loggers worked with them before, then there was the possibility of a different approach. Talking about the greatest experience of participation of the Dynamo in the European competition is somehow not hand in hand. Furthermore, only Sidorchuk, Buyalsky, Tsygankov and Besedin were left from the team that beat Besiktash in the last round (6: 0) four years ago. The latter, by the way, in the near future will only be able to help in training.

Kiev’s match schedule is interesting, with a historical background. Finally, the young generation of Dynamo fans will see the spark with Barcelona in the third or fourth round. It is not necessary to rely on the repetition of results from 23 years ago, but the army of more than 30 fans will definitely have fond memories of the past. Completing the group stage in Kiev with Ferencváros, what could be better? We already played Juventus in the sixth round, thank you. Better to take points from the Italians intimidated by the coronavirus in the opening match.

After four years of absence, the Dynamo return to the group stage of the Champions League. Mircea Lucescu in the first attempt and without reinforcing the squad did what Khatskevich could not do three times in a row. Where the team fell under Mikhailichenko, and I do not want to remember. You had to work hard not to leave the Europa League group with Copenhagen, Malmo and Lugano.
The pre-departure lineups in Group G are clear: there are two favorites who will share the first two rows, and two outsiders who will battle for a Europa League spot. But, as it seems to me, not everything is so simple and in certain situations the Dynamo can compete for the Champions League playoffs.
Lucescu is an experienced coach, he knows how to build the game of a team in matches with superior rivals. In the Ukrainian Super Cup match, the Dynamo spent almost the entire match in their own half of the field, but scored against Shakhtar three times. Similarly, in counterattacks, Dynamo will play Juventus and Barcelona. The Ukraine-Spain match, in which Andriy Shevchenko used six Dynamo players, showed that such tactics can produce results.
The Group G match schedule is very favorable for the Dynamo. The home start against Juventus, who lost Ronaldo to the coronavirus, is of course very important. There is a feeling that the Dynamo will not lose, but in certain situations they will win. Juventus is struggling to start the season, Pirlo is rebuilding the team, Ronaldo’s absence, all this should play into the hands of the hosts. This is followed by a trip to Ferencvaros, where, with all due respect to Rebrov, you must win. Of course, it will be tough in the matchup with Barcelona, but for some points, if the Dynamo plan to fight for the playoffs, they will have to hold on.
The Turin match can obviously be key in the fight for second place. How Pirlo’s Juventus will approach the fifth round is a tough question. And the youngsters of the Dynamo: Mikolenko, Zabarny, Shaparenko, Tsygankov, Supryaga, Popov in the Champions League matches, there is hope, they will grow and improve with each game. Therefore, I would dare to put the Dynamo in second place.

For the Dynamo, entering the group round of the most prestigious European tournament is already a significant achievement in itself. The people of Kiev last heard the anthem of the Champions League in the 2016/17 season, and even so they did so directly, thanks to their victory in the national championship. The White-Blues head coach that season was Sergei Rebrov, who this time will be on the other side of the field.
Rebrov is now rewriting Ferencváros history, and doing it with more success: The Ukrainian specialist helped the Hungarian club reach the group round of the Champions League for the first time in 25 years. They will also be rivals of the Dynamo in the Quartet G Barcelona and Juventus, which are considered favorites. But outsiders are quite capable of surprising the greats and imposing unexpected competition on them.
With the arrival of Mircea Lucescu, the Dynamo game has changed a lot. The Romanian specialist is one of the most experienced coaches in the world and is good at motivating the team. And there will be more than enough motivation for young players, for whom Lucescu bets. They had the opportunity to declare themselves to all of Europe, and President Igor Surkis promises not to offend them with bonuses if they are successful.
But, of course, there won’t be as many chances to compete to reach the eighth of the Champions League, you’ll have to count on luck too. And in today’s reality, when the coronavirus pandemic is gathering momentum, it is unknown which team he will be on during the most important matches of the tournament. Juventus will be coming to Kiev for the first round match without Cristiano Ronaldo, and the sportsbooks believe that the Dynamo could well win a point in this match.
And if we assume that Barcelona will de facto solve the tournament’s problems in the fourth round and bring the reserve team to Kiev, then we can count on success. Then the only thing left to do is to achieve the desired result in Turin and, of course, to get the maximum points in the confrontation with Ferencvaros. The script may not be inferior to Hollywood blockbusters, but why not dream?
