Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin said why the Donetsk club has not been buying new players for a long time.
“At one point we bought a lot of young footballers: Fernando, Cipriano, Marcos, Solomon, Tete, Vitao. They needed time to adjust and get to the level they are at today. And the fans need it today and now, but this does not happen. It so happened that our oldest players are in their 30s and the youngest in their 20s. This is the distance we had to overcome. Now these guys are ready to play for the first team.
Regarding acquisitions, we are already thinking about some positions in this transfer window. I just want to say one thing: they are not central or forward (I mean number 9). We must not forget that there is a limit of legionaries. If we talk about Ukrainians, today at the Ukrainian championship we do not see who could be stronger than our boys. If we talk about Europe, we remember point A: the limit of the legionaries.
Everyone saw how Vitao was revealed. We are confident that it will take our defensive strongholds to an entirely different level. At the same time, we still have a young Bondar, a young but experienced Matvienko. We believe in our boys. Anticipating possible comments, I want to say that sometimes a lot of potholes fly towards the centrals, but the games are lost by the whole team. There may be pure errors from the central defender, but any defender can make them. We believe that our boys will grow from game to game. Therefore, the question is closed.
As for the ninth number. We have Dentinho and Moraes. They come out today and they give results. They may have a recession at some point, but these are our seasoned players that the team looks forward to.
There are also Fernando, Sikan, Vyunnik. We believe in them. If today we go to the market to buy a foreigner, we will have to close the way for these guys. And this is the wrong strategy. We want to make decisions that lead to team development. A wrong decision can lead to many problems. Let’s say we bring in an experienced striker. What happens then with Moraes and Dentinho? With Fernando? With Vyunnik, who’s on the way? With Sikan, who is in Mariupol?
We have to let these guys know that we believe in them and are waiting. Only then will we get the result. We follow them for a long time, and we do not look with peripheral vision and we try to artificially stop the situation. We see perspective in them. We are confident that they will reach their level and occupy a worthy place in Shakhtar, said Palkin.
