Vitaliy Markiv, a Ukrainian soldier in the National Guard, was acquitted by the Milan Court of Appeal. Markiv was found not guilty of the murder of Italian journalist Andrea Roquely during hostilities in Donbass.
This was reported by the authorized representative of the Verkhovna Rada for human rights Lyudmila Denisova on her Telegram channel.
“The Milan Court of Appeal issued an acquittal in the case of our hero, completely acquitting him,” wrote the Ombudsman.
Now the soldier will return to Ukraine.
“By decision of the Milan Court of Appeal, Markiv was released from all charges. Markiv is free and is returning to Ukraine,” Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashchenko wrote on his Facebook.
Markiv’s release was also confirmed by the head of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, Arsen Avakov.
“Markiv was released. The appeals court has just made a decision,” he said.
We will recall, initially the Italian court found the Ukrainian National Guard Markiv guilty of the murder of the Italian journalist. The Ukrainian was sentenced to 24 years in prison. The Ukrainian side appealed against this decision.
As indicated in the Interior Ministry, now the Ukrainian side in the European Court will challenge Markiv’s arrest and his detention in custody.
Furthermore, the Interior Ministry called the Markiv case a hybrid war against Ukraine, because the prosecution tried to justify the terrorists.
