Ukraine’s main Christmas tree was lit today on Sophia Square in Kiev. But it did come on not without incident.
As the “Strana” correspondent reports from the scene, a fire started during the ceremony, and the ceremony itself was long delayed.
The tree was supposed to glow at 7:00 p.m., but it happened almost 40 minutes later.
People who were frozen from a long wait in the frost (and many people came) joked that if they didn’t light the tree now, “we will light it ourselves.”
And just a few minutes later, these words turned out to be prophetic.
At approximately 7:40 p.m. in Kiev, the main tree began to glow. It lit up green, the star at the top flashed from gold to silver, and many hanging gold garlands descended from it.
After lighting the tree, the fireworks started. From one of the discharges, which for some reason was not directed towards the sky, but towards the heads of the people, a fire was started: a decorative arch, placed on the same metal structure as the flares, caught fire.
None of the bystanders were injured, they all managed to get away from the fire in time.
Literally in a minute, the fire was extinguished by the nearby forces of men. They ran in search of fire extinguishers to the nearest “house” where mulled wine was sold.
After the incident, a fire safety inspection employee conducted a witness survey at the scene. However, he did not comment on what sanctions organizers are facing for the fire.
As reported by “Strana”, in Chaplinka, Kherson region, the city’s main tree was also burned. According to preliminary information, the cause of the fire was a short circuit of the garland, now only a damaged frame remains in the square.
In addition, “Strana” wrote that on St. Nicholas Day, in Kiev on Sofia Square, hundreds of people gathered to see the main Ukrainian Christmas tree being solemnly illuminated.
